2006 Volkswagen Passat
by Rebecca Antioco- 2/06

What’s not to like about the new Volkswagen Passat? For 2006 VW has improved their already excellent mid-size family sedan, making it bigger, better and more comfortable than before.

Like its smaller sibling, the Jetta, Passat gets an extreme makeover for 2006. It grew by three inches in width and length, increasing rear legroom by 2.4 inches.  In profile, the Passat looks more streamlined, while still maintaining its distinctive shape. On the squared off back end, round white taillamps are framed in red. Aggressive front styling includes fog lamps and a four-bar grille sporting a huge chrome VW badge.

Interior quality is where Passat clearly outshines the competition. Class leading interior-design includes high quality materials, intuitive and attractive controls. Wood grain on the center console and red ambient lighting gives the Passat a decidedly upscale, classy look and feel. As great as the interior was in previous generations, Volkswagen made it better for 2006.

But the changes aren’t purely cosmetic. Four well-appointed trim levels are available: Value, 2.0T, 3.6L, and 3.6L 4Motion. Value Edition and 2.0T models come with a 200-horsepower inline four cylinder engine, with six-speed manual or automatic transmission. 3.6 models come with a 280-horsepower V-6 with automatic transmission. The 3.6 4Motion is all-wheel drive. Volkswagen boasts that the Passat’s body structure is 56 percent stiffer than before, resulting in sportier handling and firmer suspension.

Even the Value Edition comes loaded with features like power everything, cruise control, eight-speaker CD/MP3 audio system, tilt/telescoping steering, keyless entry and leatherette seating. Upgrade to the 2.0T and you get more than 100 standard features, 20 more on the 3.6L.

I drove the 2.0T, and was impressed with the look, feel and drive quality. Drive quality, handling, braking, comfort — all get five stars.

So, what’s not to like? I guess you could complain that the top-of-the-line Passat will cost more than an Accord or Camry. But even at its base model, Passat will turn more heads and provide more driving comfort than either of those competitors.
