On the Go and In the Know — Amsterdam

Beautiful, friendly, amazing Amsterdam. No European city is easier to know. And no city offers so much to see and do in so compact an area. Amsterdam has everything you expect Europe to have — museums, history, dining, and, of course, shopping. Then it surprises by offering so much more.

For a valuable and inspiring perspective on this "Venice of the North," consider a Canal Bus day pass. The on-board commentary informs, while the hop-on/hop-off privileges are ideal for visiting major attractions, shopping districts, and museums.

Speaking of museums, Amsterdam has more per square foot than any city on Earth. The Rijksmuseum houses more than 3,000 paintings — an unrivaled collection of 17th-century Dutch Masters, including Rembrandt and Vermeer. Nearby, the Van Gogh dazzles with the world's largest collection of its namesake's art.

Anne Frank House is perhaps the city's best known museum. Not only does it bring her famed diary to life; it is a living testament against racism.

Amsterdam also offers some of the finest shopping in Europe. Check out the major department stores on Dam Square, and then browse the shops and boutiques on the adjoining streets. And don't overlook the many street markets, including the Floating Flower Market on the Singel. And, of course, visit the diamond factories.

As for eating, delicacies abound. Try some Poffertjes, tiny, fluffy pancakes that literally caress your palate. Other tasty treats include Dutch frites with dipping sauce, smoked herring with onions, Edam and Gouda cheese, and Broodjes, sandwiches with smoked eel. Thirsty? Rub shoulders with real Amsterdammers at a brown café (Dutch pub). Above all, indulge in an Indonesian rijsttafel, an extravaganza up to 35 tantalizing courses long.

If time permits, squeeze in some day trips — The Hague for greenery and history, seaside Scheveningen and Holland-in-miniature at Madurodam, traditional Volendam for windmills and wooden shoes, Alkmaar cheese market, Zaanse Schans for more windmills, the blue pottery of Delft, and, in spring, the Bulb Fields and Keukenhof Gardens. Imagine a rainbow fallen to earth.

Follow in Rembrandt's footsteps the easy way. Go Dutch with a package in tune with your interests. Many travel professionals recommend Travel Bound. Brief stopover or leisurely getaway, this leading hotel and vacation specialist offers several exceptional Amsterdam packages, including the flexibility to custom-create your own Dutch masterpiece. Amsterdam may not be the first European city you visit, but it will definitely be a favorite.
