The “I Promise” Pledge to Drive Safely

We all know what to do behind the wheel and we know what not to do. But sometimes we forget. We do stupid things and get into trouble or we get hurt. Often all it takes is a little reminder. And that’s the idea behind Karen Benway’s “I Promise” teardrop. It’s so simple yet so effective. We love it.

It’s a clear acrylic piece of plastic in the shape of a teardrop with the words “I Promise” on it and it hangs from your rearview mirror as a visual reminder that there are people who care about you and who want you to be a safe driver. It’s especially effective with teenagers.

Along with the teardrop, you get a promise card that says you’ll not drink and drive, that you won’t engage in reckless driving and that you’ll always wear your seat belt. When you sign the pledge, you can hang the teardrop in your car. The teardrop represents lives lost in traffic crashes and the pain loved ones feel for a lifetime.Karen Benway is a high school track coach. She’s also the mother of a teenager. It was during one sleepless night, waiting for her then 16-year-daughter to return home, that Karen came up with the idea of the “I Promise” teardrop.“I just wanted something that would always be in her face, reminding her,” Karen said.AAA likes this idea because it’s positive reinforcement of correct driving behaviors. It’s inexpensive (they sell it “at cost”) and it works for all ages. The teardrops are $6 each and come with either a purple ribbon or brown leather string.
