CarFit Helps Mature Drivers Find Their Perfect “Fit”

News from AAA South Dakota and Volunteers of America, Sept. 22 – An event to check how well drivers 65 years-of-age and older “fit” in their vehicles will be held Wednesday, September 24, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Center for Active Generations at 2300 West 46th Street, Sioux Falls.

CarFit is a free event, open to the public. Mature drivers are encouraged to come by, driving their personal vehicle. Once there, trained CarFit technicians will perform a quick, but comprehensive check of how well the driver and his or her vehicle work together to maximize safety.

The 12-point CarFit check will cover such items as mirror positioning, car seat and headrest adjustment, easy access to gas and brake pedals, clear line of sight over the steering wheel, sufficient room between the driver and the steering wheel, seat belt use and ability to look over one’s shoulder when changing lanes.

Drivers will leave with recommended car adjustments, if any, plus a list of resources, such as local occupational therapy and driver-safety courses, and greater peace of mind. Each entire CarFit check takes about 15 minutes.

To reserve a time for the September 24 CarFit event, call Lisa Howard at The Center for Active Generations in Sioux Falls at 605-333-3307.  We are limited to the number of drivers who register, so please call right away to reserve your spot.

Sponsors of this CarFit event are AAA South Dakota and the Volunteers of America. The program was developed by the American Society on Aging in partnership with AAA, AARP, and the American Occupational Therapy Assn.
